This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk, and Trev discuss the revamped classic that is Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door.

Last week, we caught up on Tears of the Kingdom on its anniversary. This week we get into something new yet old as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door celebrates an anniversary of its own. Twenty years on and the revamped Switch version brings new characters, battles, and quality-of-life improvements, not to mention the updated visuals and audio.

We also talk about the recent news that Atari has purchased Intellivision. If you were gaming in the ’70s or ’80s, you were likely to have played one of these systems. Kirk and Trev in particular give their thoughts on this situation, which is touted to be the end of the long-running “first console war”.

Dave the Diver has recently received some DLC, which brings Godzilla into the mix. Plus, we’ve been playing a classic NES title, a new visual novel, and continuing our foray into Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Thanks for listening, we love putting these shows together, so let us know your thoughts! And don’t forget to leave us a review to help support the channel.

Last week, we talked about Nintendo’s latest sales data announced during their annual fiscal report. This week, we begin with a look at sales for Tears of the Kingdom and how that compares to BReath of the Wild and other titles and series.

We delve further into Tears of the Kingdom, with Kirk and Jemma having jumped back into the game this week. Where are we at? What have we achieved? And how do we feel about it 12 months on?

We talk about our favorite moments in the game, along with what we think could be improved in future iterations. Plus, we talk about the future of the franchise, the lack of DLC for Tears of the Kingdom, and much more.

We end the show by chatting about a couple of non-Zelda games we’re playing, including Please Fix My Road and Ikki Unite.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma and Kirk talk about a couple of water-based titles out this week, including Another Crab’s Treasure and Endless Ocean: Luminous.

Last week, we revisited Jemma’s trip in Japan, including a discussion about the amazing Super Nintendo World. This week, we take things under the ocean to discuss a couple of recently released titles set underwater.

Endless Ocean: Luminous is the third in the series, presenting a relaxing scuba-diving adventure with over 500 creatures to catalogue. Meanwhile, Another Crab’s Treasure may look cute on the surface, but it’s actually a tough Soulslike experience featuring difficult battles and plenty of collectibles.

We also delve into the altest Zelda movie news, with director Wes Ball giving fans hope that he’s taking it seriously as a fan himself. Plus, keen eyes online have spotted a new ESRB rating for something called Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. Is this a new Remix-style game coming our way soon?

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma and Kirk are joined by special guest Barry Carenza from Premium Edition Games.

Last week, we got into the pros and cons of originals vs. remakes. This week, we discuss some amazing titles heading to the Nintendo Switch in physical format via Premium Edition Games.

We go through a list of outstanding titles, from the cuteness of Poglings to the dark RPG goodness of Kristala. We also touch on the Mana-inspired Godshard Chronicles along with the platforming prowess of Atomic Owl. Other highlights include Tadpole Treble Encore, Scarlet Tower, and Curse Crackers: For Whom the Belle Toils. There’s a lot of great content to get into!

Indie devs do some amazing work, but there’s a lot of content that gets missed on the eShop. The Premium Edition Games team works closely with developers to help highlight high-quality games and help preserve them in physical format. Check out the latest offerings from Premium Edition Games.

We also chat about the latest games we’re playing, including Snufkin and Loretta.

Last week, we discussed all things Mario in celebration of MAR10 Day. This week is all about the Muchroom Kingdom’s famed princess, Princess Peach. With her latest game out now, we talk about our time with Princess Peach: Showtime so far. And it’s looking good.

A recent interview with Wes Ball, who’s directing the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, reveals some of his thoughts on the world he’s creating for the film. We spend some time dicussing our reactions, hopes, and thoughts on the upcoming film.

Meanwhile, the Gameboy Advance was released in Japan 23 year ago last week. We discuss our fave memories with the handheld, which games we enjoyed, and more.

We wrap up with a chat about the games we’re playing, including Princess Peach: Showtime! of course. Kirk has an interesting update on The Vale, as well as a JRPG called Legend of Legacy. Or is it Legacy of Legend?

Rough Justice ‘84 is a strategy-puzzle title for the Nintendo Switch. It involves hiring agents and solving cases in a fictional, crime-ridden city set in the 1980s. With neon lighting, voice acting, and a synth-based ‘80s soundtrack, it has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, there are cracks beneath the surface of this Switch version that mar the experience.

The story revolves around Jim, an ex-cop who was sent to the slammer for a crime he didn’t commit. Upon release, he’s given a second chance to clean the streets via a new crime-fighting agency. The premise of the game involves taking on caseloads from clients and hiring special agents to do the actual work.

Rough Justice '84 - Nintendo Switch - screen 2

The cases vary enough to keep things interesting, requiring your hired guns to do everything from tracking down a missing person to finding a stolen vehicle. Cases are solved via a few means. Most rely on a dice-based game requiring you to roll certain numbers. For example, you might need a four, five, or six in order to complete the mission. Others use time-based puzzles, offering you the chance to hotwire cars or open a door by connecting wires.

The agents themselves come equipped with stats based on strength, intelligence, empathy, and perception. In other words, you’re better off using an agent with strong perception to solve cases requiring that skill. Agents also come equipped with action points. Once spent, the agent will need to take a break, sending you back to the recruitment pool to hire your next contracter.

On paper, this all sounds great. And it is, in terms of the concept. Unfortunately, Rough Justice ‘84 suffers from a problem we see regularly on the Switch; it’s not ported well at all.

Rough Justice '84 - Nintendo Switch - screen 1

Most of the issues stem from poor controls. It’s easy to tell that this title was meant to be played on a PC with a mouse. Moving around the map to select cases with the control stick is a cumbersome experience, especially when time limits are at play. Another problem is the inconsistent mapping of the buttons. Sometimes the A button is used to select something, at other times, the Y button. And then, sometimes, you’ll even need to use the B button. It’s messy, and it gets even worse. Let me go through my experience.

Selecting a case requires you to move your cursor over the icon within the city. Press A. Now you’re given a spiel about the case. Then you have to press ZL to select your agent. Then A to…select your agent. Then Y to accept the case. Now your agent moves to the location on the map in a frustrating slow way. Oh, pressing X lets you speed it up, but it takes your cursor away from the map. There’s no way to know that, of course, so when your agent arrives, they sit idle for about 15 seconds while you try in vain to get back to the case. The agent literally gives up and the case is automatically failed. You lose money, XP, and reputation points. The word “frustrating” springs to mind.

Rough Justice '84 - Nintendo Switch - screen 3

There are other issues. The introduction is so overladen with instructions as to be overwhelming and confusing. The soundtrack is actually great in terms of the synthy background music, but the audio itself is awful—some voiceovers are super loud for some reason. It feels very poorly put together.

I was also stuck in a loop at one point near the beginning when I was told to check out the shop for the first time to purchase gear for my agent. When I tried to buy something, I was told that my current agent (who was suggested to me for the first mission) had no spare gear slots. Why, then, am I in the shop? And how do I exit? I tried every button to exit only to find myself frustratingly stuck in a loop of “buy something; no you can’t buy anything; buy something.” I’m still not sure how I eventually escaped. Needless to say, I was reluctant to return to the shop again.

Overall, Rough Justice ‘84 presents a unique concept that’s executed poorly on the Switch. It’s hard to recommend this one at all. The soundtrack is a highlight, for sure, and the idea of solving cases is a fun concept. Unfortunately, the controls and poor user interface makes this one to avoid.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma and Kirk chat about MAR10 Day, Princess Peach: Showtime!, Unicorn Overlord, Switch 2 rumors, and much more.

Last week, we broke down the latest Pokémon news. This week we kick things off with a look at Mario Day – the annual celebration of all things Mario. We recorded before March 10, so we have fun speculating on what could be announced on the day.

Princess Peach Showtime! is heading to the Switch shortly and a new demo is available to try right now. Jemma has played through and gives her thoughts on the game so far. It’s looking good!

Meanwhile, Kirk is playing the highly anticipated Unicorn Overlord along with something interesting called Grime. We get into the nitty gritty of whether these games hit the spot.

We dissect the latest Switch 2 rumors, discussing everything from price to technology. It’s fun to speculate, and we have our own opinions of course, but nothing is final until we hear from Nintendo. When will that happen? Who knows!

Thanks for listening, we love putting these shows together, so let us know your thoughts! And don’t forget to leave us a review to help support the channel.
