Hopefully you found something to look forward to in today’s Nintendo Indie Direct. If not, here’s another bit of news that was featured only in the Japan Direct; the co-op platformer Bread & Fred will be served on Nintendo Switch on May 23, 2024.

Along with its promise of “chaos and catchy tunes,” Bread & Fred will allows players to “…experience the breathtaking highs and frosty face-planting lows of Bread & Fred on the go, with even more adventure awaiting atop the icy peaks!” Nintendo games will be able to meet the newest member of the mountaintop crew, Pol the Polar Bear, and will feature 10 all-new time trial challenges that can unlock special rewards.

And just what is Bread & Fred? Well…

Bundle up for the tandem-trek of a lifetime as Bread and Fred, pint-sized penguin pals, embark on a journey to the top of the summit. Intrepid climbers land heart-pounding jumps, clear sprawling gaps, and maneuver slippery platforms, all while attached at the hip to a (hopefully) trusty partner. Communicate via in-game emojis to count down every jump.

Find the perfect penguin partner and clear record-setting runs together in Speedrun Mode. Interested in a single-player solo climb? Swap out a penguin pal for Jeff the Rock to sling and jump-throw across the slippery slopes.

Music plays an important part in the overall experience, and will feature selections ranging from  smooth jazz to hip-hop. The “Super Duper Ultra Redux” mixtape featuring an hour of tracks from gaming composers such as Grant Kirkhope (GoldenEye, Donkey Kong 64), Chipper Hammond (composer, Turbo Overkill), and Tim Stoney (Assassin’s Creed: Origins). Players will be able to chose the perfect song for every climb. The official soundtrack will be available on all major music streaming services.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Justin, Kirk, Trev, and Jemma discuss the recent Nintendo Direct, breaking down the announcements that we enjoyed the most.

Last week, we discussed a range of titles that we’re playing at the moment. This week, there’s a whole lot of new content to look forward to. We talk about our highlights from the 40-minute presentation, including the brand-new title Princess Peach Showtime. We finally have some footage of this Peach-centric outing, which was first teased in a previous presentation. In Showtime, Peach takes on various roles within a theatre setting, from a sword-weilding fighter to a classicly inspired detective. It looks interesting, and we’re keen to see more ahead of its March 2024 release.

A lot of the games covered in the showcase are remakes, ports or collections. We speculate about what this means in terms of the Switch’s lifecycle. A lot these are classic titles that new gamers might not have played, with everything from Contra to Super Mario RPG.

We’d love to know your thoughts on the show, and on the latest Nintendo Direct! Let us know in the comments section of YouTube.

Until next time, game on everyone!

After a flurry of speculation and bogus posts on your various social media channels, Nintendo has confirmed what we’ve all been hoping for—their (somewhat) traditional September Nintendo Direct.

The event will be streamed live at 10am EDT, 7am PDT, on Thursday, September 14th. The times were posted with the statement that the event will feature “… roughly 40 minutes of information focused on Nintendo Switch games releasing this winter.”

We could offer our thoughts on what Switch owners can expect tomorrow, but we all know there’s not much point to that other than the fun of speculation. That, and what I’m hoping for tends to not gel with what the Nintendoverse wants. You want F-Zero and Metroid Prime 4, I want even more Fire Emblem, and a revival of the Trauma Center franchise. There is no right or wrong.

We do know that Super Mario Bros. Wonder got it’s own Direct a couple weeks ago, and that clears up the event’s 40 minute run time to focus other Nintendo and third-party games. So, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Nintendo gamers can each decide exactly what those games will be by visiting http://ninten.do/60129e87e at their local time tomorrow.

Today’s Nintendo Direct gave Switch owners a lot to look forward to, and amongst the more exciting announcements is that KOEI TECMO is finally bringing Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse to western audiences in remastered form.

The original 2008 Wii release was exclusive to Japan, but will now be available worldwide for multiple consoles, including Nintendo Switch.

FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse takes place a decade after five girls mysteriously disappeared at a festival on Rōgetsu Isle, an island in southern Japan. While all of the girls were eventually rescued, their memories were lost, with only the faint remembrance of a single melody and a seemingly possessed masked woman dancing in the moonlight. Now, ten years later, with still no memory of the events surrounding their disappearance, two of the five girls have died — discovered with covered faces and found in a tragic, crying pose. The remaining three girls now head off to the eerie island to solve the mystery of their friends’ death, while also unlocking the mystery of the memories left behind.

As the girls explore the western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on Rōgetsu Isle, they will rely on the moonlight and a faint flashlight to search for clues. The story progresses by discovering relics like old newspaper articles and notes that help the girls unravel the island’s secret past. While exploring, the girls will also be confronted by a series of spirits. They will need to use a FATAL FRAME franchise classic, the Camera Obscura, to repel vengeful ghosts, sealing away their power by photographing them. Throughout the game, the girls will need to equip stronger lenses and change out different films in order to capture the most powerful spirits, while also using the camera to capture “things that cannot be seen” to help them find the evidence they need to remember their haunting past.

As is customary with the series—including last year’s remaster of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water—the remastered version of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will include an all-new Photo Mode, new and altered (queue the goofy censorship “concerns”) costumes, and enhanced graphics to deliver “…a more immersive and frightening experience.”

In addition, in-game movies and character models have been brushed-up to deliver a story that shines, both narratively and aesthetically as the three remaining girls attempt to rediscover their past before becoming victims once again.

No official release date has been announced, but we’ll be sure to let you know when KOEI TECMO updates the current “early 2023” designation. Until then, fans can keep an eye on  www.koeitecmoamerica.com/fatalframe/mask/ for more information.

We’re just a little over a month away from the launch of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for the Switch, and Nintendo wants to make sure you’re good and hyped (as if JRPG fans aren’t already losing their mind from the wait).

This Wednesday, June 22nd, Nintendo will air a 20 minute Nintendo Direct dedicated specifically to Xenoblade Chronicles. The livestream will start at 10am EDT. They haven’t provided details about which aspects of the game will receive focus, but we can anticipate more on the setting and battle system.

Nintendo has dropped the occasional character profile and soundtrack pieces via social media since announcing the game, so it’s likely we’ll get a roundup of that information, as well.

Fans of the series will recall a slew of videos released ahead of the Xenoblade Chronicles X release to introduce that game’s intricate gameplay elements and wonderful use of the Wii U Gamepad, so it’s possible the direct could serve as a bit of an early tutorial. We know Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will combine gameplay elements from previous XC titles, and it’ll be exciting to learn how those will tie together.

Whatever Nintendo decides to show us, it’ll just make the crawl towards the game’s release on July 29th seem that much slower (perhaps even as slow as their website during the initial Special Edition pre-order opening attempt).

The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Nintendo Direct will be available via livestream from Nintendo’s website. For more information on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, visit www.nintendo.com.

The company has also announced that the live-action mystery/adventure The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story is heading west.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct offered announcements and surprises for pretty much everyone. What it didn’t have was The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story. This live-action mystery/adventure was part of the Japan Direct only, but SQUARE ENIX has announced that it will be coming to western audiences on May 12th, 2022.

“Live action” has always been a red flag for me, but one viewing of the trailer makes it clear that The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story kicks the production level up (quite) a few notches and could be something different. The game—which is directed by Koichiro Ito (Metal Gear Solid V) and produced by Junichi Ehara (NieR:Automata)—centers around a family who have experienced a chain of inexplicable deaths in their family over the past century.

Players will take on the role of mystery novelist, Haruka Kagami and use their powers of deductions to uncover the truth behind four murder cases that have taken place in the Shijima household over the last one hundred years. Take on this accessible mystery story, uncover the truth of the case and reveal the culprit!

Yasuhito Tachibana, producer of Netflix’s ‘The Naked Director’ serves as Cinematographer and Scenario Director on The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story, taking visual storytelling to a new level with high-quality cinematography and thrilling live-action gameplay. Players will be immersed into an authentically traditional Japanese story where they will transcend time across different eras of Japan while collecting information scattered throughout each era to uncover the truth behind the ill-fated Shijima family and solve an age-old mystery.

Ahead of its May 19th PC release, preorders through Steam include the base game, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a mini soundtrack composed by Yuki Hayashi (anime and game series DRAGON QUEST: The Adventure of Dai), Daiki Okuno, Ryoshi Takagi, Shuichiro Fukuhiro and Shogo Yamashiro. There’s no indication yet of whether the same package will be offered for Nintendo Switch, but we’ll keep an eye open for that announcement.

The latest Nintendo Direct has happened! Did you tune in? A ton of information was dropped on fans, including a Splatoon 3 trailer and the announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. One of the biggest surprises, though, was a whole swag of DLC coming to everyone’s favorite racer, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

We won’t have to wait long, either, with the first round of tracks due on March 18, 2022. There are six release “waves” planned to be staggered over the course of the next two years. Each wave features eight tracks for a grand total of 48. Phwoar!

This will be the first DLC we’ve seen for the Switch version of the game, which came pre-packaged with the original Wii U DLC. Those packs included two paid DLCs that were originally released in 2014 and 2015, bringing The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing into the Mario Kart fold.

It’s an exciting time for fans. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, making it five years since we’ve seen anything new for Mario Kart – and the Switch version is a port (a good port, to be sure). Of course, that’s not including Mario Kart’s mobile version, which itself looks to have made a big enough impact to bring some its own fine courses to the Switch.

The first lot of DLC includes none other than Mario Kart Tour’s Toyko Blur, one the mobiel game’s tracks inspired by real-world cities. This track will debut on the Switch along with the Wii’s Coconut Mall and N64’s Choco Mountain, plus five other tracks over two cups:

Golden Dash Cup

  • Paris Promenade (Mario Kart Tour)
  • Toad Circuit (Mario Kart 3DS)
  • Choco Mountain (Mario Kart 64)
  • Coconut Mall (Mario Kart Wii)

Lucky Cat Cup

  • Tokyo Blur (Mario Kart Tour)
  • Shroom Ridge (Mario Kart DS)
  • Sky Garden (Mario Kart Advance)
  • Ninja Hideaway (Mario Kart Tour).

The DLC will cost US$24.99, however you can also access the content for free if you’re a Nintendo Switch Online member with the Expansion Pack.

Check out the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass announcement trailer below. Which track are you hoping makes the cut in the remaining waves? Let us know your thoughts below.

Nintendo has announced its latest Nintendo Direct! The online event will be livestreamed today/tomorrow, depending where and when you’re reading this news. The Nintendo Direct will begin on Wednesday 9 February from 2 pm PT (Pacific Time).

According to Nintendo, we can expect “roughly 40 minutes of information mainly focused on Nintendo Switch games launching in the first half of 2022”. Exciting stuff!

If you’re looking for your local time, check out the below list to see when you’ll need to be online to catch the latest Nintendo Direct.

  • 2 pm PT on Wednesday 9 Feb
  • 4 pm CT on Wednesday 9 Feb
  • 5 pm ET on Wednesday 9 Feb
  • 10 pm UTC Wednesday 9 Feb (UK)
  • 7 am JST Thursday 10 Feb (Japan)
  • 8 am AEST Thursday 10 Feb (Australia)
  • 9 am AEDT Thursday 10 Feb (Australia)

You’ll be able to view the livestream over on Nintendo’s YouTube channel. There’s a simple timer taunting us for the moment, but you can set a reminder if you want to be notified when the event starts.

It’s been awhile since we’ve had the pleasure of a Nintendo Direct. The last Nintendo livestream was on 14 December 2021, which was a dedicated indie showcase. The last proper 40-minute long Nintendo Direct, featuring first party titles like Kirby and the Forgotten Land, was way back in September of 2021.

What do you think will be discussed during the presentation? Mario Party DLC? A Breath of the Wild 2 trailer? Or a big surprise? We only have about 17 hours to wait and see. Don’t you just love the suspense?

Let the speculation begin!
