This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk, and Trev discuss the revamped classic that is Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door.

Last week, we caught up on Tears of the Kingdom on its anniversary. This week we get into something new yet old as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door celebrates an anniversary of its own. Twenty years on and the revamped Switch version brings new characters, battles, and quality-of-life improvements, not to mention the updated visuals and audio.

We also talk about the recent news that Atari has purchased Intellivision. If you were gaming in the ’70s or ’80s, you were likely to have played one of these systems. Kirk and Trev in particular give their thoughts on this situation, which is touted to be the end of the long-running “first console war”.

Dave the Diver has recently received some DLC, which brings Godzilla into the mix. Plus, we’ve been playing a classic NES title, a new visual novel, and continuing our foray into Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

Thanks for listening, we love putting these shows together, so let us know your thoughts! And don’t forget to leave us a review to help support the channel.

Until next time, game on everyone!

Please Fix the Road is a puzzle game for the Nintendo Switch. As the name suggests, your goal is to repair the path so objects can move from point A to point B. Simple? Yes. Charming? Also, yes.

The first thing you’ll notice when playing Please Fix the Road is the adorable aesthetics. There’s no story to speak of – literally none – so it’s up to the design and the puzzles to keep you invested. The developers have excelled in both areas, presenting bite-sized sections of the world ready for repair.

In terms of design, the pastel colors create a soothing experience. The accompanying music adds to this vibe, too, with twinkly, upbeat tunes that help you settle in for a few rounds of brain teasers. This isn’t a stressful outing, with no timer or life meter anywhere in sight. It’s purely about taking your time to connect two sections of a path.

Please Fix the Road - Nintendo Switch - screen1

Each puzzle consists of a chunk of land divided into segments. There’s a start and end point with a vehicle or creature sitting patiently at the beginning while you sort out the connection issues ahead. Yes, creature. Despite the polite way the title seeks your help, you’re not here only to fix roads; trains, boats, and animals are also stuck, meaning you’ll need to fix tracks, rivers, and dirt paths. This variety keeps things feeling fresh, even if the basic elements remain the same. There’s a simple pleasure in aiding your awol cow on its journey home. C’mon little guy, you can make it!

The puzzles themselves are interesting in their setup. Each broken path requires a number of ordered steps to fix it, presented to you in the bottom left of the screen. You’re given the tools and the sequence in which to use them, so what’s left to do? The tricky part is working out the logical placement. For example, you might be presented with a bomb to clear a square, a road to fill an empty square, and a copy ability to copy and paste part of the terrain. But which area do you cut, fill, copy, and replace?

Please Fix the Road - Nintendo Switch - screen2

This leads to plenty of trial and error. Thankfully, you can rewind your moves with a simple tap of the L button, allowing you to try alternate approaches. Some pieces of road are L-shaped, for example, so you’ll need to destroy the right spot for this piece to fit. It feels like coming in at the end to finish a jigsaw puzzle, albeit in a set order.

I have to mention the transitions between puzzles. Upon completion, the current puzzle is pulled apart into small cubes before rolling away and bringing in a new puzzle. It’s like a PowerPoint transition – only way cooler. This simple highlight just adds to the cute and cozy aesthetic of the entire game.

Please Fix the Road - Nintendo Switch - screen3

So, are there any shortcomings? Without scores or ratings, there’s no reason to replay levels. However, with 160 puzzles to get through (and potentially more to come), you’re unlikely to need to revisit them. Do you revisit sudokus or crosswords once complete? Perhaps a daily challenge could help extend the life of this title. At its current price of $9.99, though, it sits about right for me.

One minor gripe comes in the form of the inability to rotate or zoom in on a puzzle. It’s not always needed, but some trickier puzzles could benefit from having the option to move around the 3D space to see it from another perspective. There’s some spatial awareness required to solve these puzzles, and while I appreciate the developers have kept it simple, this could add another dimension to the gameplay.

Overall, Please Fix the Road is a relaxing puzzle game full of brain-teasing roads and other paths to fix. The cute aesthetics are lovely, and the simple concept of connecting routes is terrific. While it’s a simple affair, this budget title offers plenty of puzzles to keep you coming back until you solve them all.

It’s the weekend and that means it’s game time! So, what’s happening on the eShop? There’s a bit of a theme this week with Paper Mario’s revamped version of The Thousand-Year Door along with the puzzle-adventure stylings of Paper Trail.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was originally released in 2004 for the GameCube. The revamped Switch release comes just in time for its 20th anniversary, bringing updated visuals and audio along with new characters, battles, and quality-of-life updates. The color and fun of the original remains intact, though, so whether you’re a new or old fan, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. We’ll be giving our first impressions on this week’s Pure Nintendo Podcast, so stay tuned!

What’s better than one paper-based outing? Two, of course. Paper Trail continues the paper theme with a puzzle-adventure title set in a foldable paper world. You play as the aptly named Paige, folding the world to solve pupzzles and discover secrets.

There’s also some exciting DLC for Dave the Diver this week as Godzilla joins the story. This free DLC features all-new stories and battles, and it’s available now. What makes a good game even better? Well, Godzilla, of course. We’ll be sure to check it out and let you know our thoughts on the Pure Nintendo Podcast as well.

Meanwhile, the Minecraft anniversary sale continues, plus there’s special Paper Mario activities to check it out. In short, it’s another busy week!

There’s plenty more happening so check out the full list of new releases below and let us know which games you’re playing this weekend.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk, and Justin revisit Tears of the Kingdom in celebration of its anniversary.

Last week, we talked about Nintendo’s latest sales data announced during their annual fiscal report. This week, we begin with a look at sales for Tears of the Kingdom and how that compares to BReath of the Wild and other titles and series.

We delve further into Tears of the Kingdom, with Kirk and Jemma having jumped back into the game this week. Where are we at? What have we achieved? And how do we feel about it 12 months on?

We talk about our favorite moments in the game, along with what we think could be improved in future iterations. Plus, we talk about the future of the franchise, the lack of DLC for Tears of the Kingdom, and much more.

We end the show by chatting about a couple of non-Zelda games we’re playing, including Please Fix My Road and Ikki Unite.

Have you been playing Tears of the Kingdom recently? Let us know your thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom. How do you feel about it on its anniversary?

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma, Kirk and Trev delve into Nintendo latest fiscal reports, during which Nintendo President Furukawa mentioned the Big N’s next console.

Last week we talked about undersea adventures, Zelda news, and ESRB ratings. This week is HUGE, with the first official word from Nintendo that a Switch successor will be announced within the next 10 months. It’s an exciting time to be a Nintendo fan, and we discuss our thoughts for the next 6 months on the Switch.

We also discuss last week’s ESRB rating, which has now been confirmed as a July title called Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. It features over 150 challenges across 13 NES games, giving players a chance to compete for glory.

We’re also playing a lot of games this week, from the feline adventures of Little Kitty, Big City to JRPG goodness of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Plus Trev is playing a fishing RPG called Moonglow Bay, while Kirk is also playing the interesting-sounding, retro-inspired Goliath Depot.

Endless Ocean Luminous is the third title in the scuba-diving series that began with the Wii in 2007. This latest entry gave fans a nice surprise when it was announced by Nintendo only months before release. It may be a slightly different take on the series, but it still brings a relaxing underwater experience full of sea life for adventurers to enjoy.

You play the role of a deep-sea diver who catalogs the environment by scanning each and every creature dwelling below the surface. This simple premise creates the perfect form of escape. There’s no life meter or timer to worry about; in fact, there’s nothing stressful at all. Even your air tank never runs out of oxygen. If you want a chilled experience to help unwind after a long day, there’s nothing quite like sitting back and enjoying a dip into the world of Endless Ocean Luminous.

There are four modes to enjoy. When you first dive in, you’ll automatically begin in Story mode, with Chapter 1 taking you through the basics of how to play. This is a great way to start things off, gently introducing you to the mechanics of diving. Once complete, further chapters are unlocked, allowing you to choose to progress with the story or try another mode.

Endless Ocean Luminous - Nintendo Switch - screen 3

The story itself involves a mysterious underwater tree that’s losing light. The premise is to collect light from sea life by scanning them during your dives. This, in turn, powers up the dying tree, bringing balance back to nature. It’s a feel-good story that’s perfectly fine; it’s just enough to motivate you, though, honestly, the scanning itself is so enjoyable that you don’t really need an overarching reason to do so. Still, the chapters are generally short and sweet enough to enjoy between dive sessions, giving you a nice story to follow if you choose. One niggle is that you eventually reach a point in the story where you can’t proceed until you’ve scanned a certain amount of creatures. While I had no qualms about returning to dives, it seems like an unnecessary blocker if you’re generally interested in the story.

This leads us to Solo Dives. As the title suggests, this is the spot for diving into the ocean on your own. You’re presented with a large area to explore, specially generated when you begin a new dive. Although some elements like caves and reefs are bound to appear each time, it keeps each dive feeling fresh. You can save and return to an existing dive, too, which is just as well; it takes a long time to thoroughly scan the entire area.

A map in the top right shows your position in relation to the area’s boundaries. The map is blank to begin with, filling out with topographical blues as you swim through. A handy percentage indicator updates as you progress, and it’s easy to see which areas are still blank.

The other incentive to visit new areas is that this also tends to lead to the discovery of new aquatic life. This is where Endless Ocean Luminous truly shines. There are well over 500 species to discover (578 to be precise). There’s something calming about casually swimming through crystalline waters and witnessing the amazing life that dwells within.

Endless Ocean Luminous - Nintendo Switch - screen 1

And everything looks fantastic. The humble Switch does a great job of presenting players with a beautiful world to explore. The water is simply teeming with life. I’m genuinely impressed by this. Not only is there a lot of data to load when you dive (with thankfully short load times), but the fish look so real. I constantly felt like I was swimming through a National Geographic documentary.

Cataloging creatures is super satisfying. It’s a two-step process. Firstly, you scan an area with a quick tap (or hold) of the L button. Holding allows you to scan multiple fish at once, cutting down on any tedium that might set in. Once scanned, you can optionally snap a photo since there’s an album to fill out in addition to the scan logs. This is equally fun; I love lining up the perfect shot, preferably with choral or something interesting in the background.

The documentary aspect comes from the description of each creature. This is also optional, but once a creature is scanned, a quick tap of the A button presents a blurb of text that’s also read aloud. It’s not too long, not too short—the perfect amount of info for learning about sea life.

The next mode is Shared Dives. This is very similar to the solo mode with one key difference: this is where you go to dive with friends or random online players. I was curious about the online experience, which the trailer promised would group up to 30 online players in an expedition. The Switch isn’t known for its online prowess, but I was pleasantly surprised to find this mode works quite well. I was equally surprised at how fun it is to swim with other players. There’s an instant bond that develops when you encounter another person sharing this world with you, and you can wave and perform other antics to show your camaraderie. It would be even better if you could talk to them, but that doesn’t appear to be a feature of this version.

Endless Ocean Luminous - Nintendo Switch - screen 2

Another missing feature is the jukebox. The music that accompanies each dive is lovely, with ambient tunes that twinkle serenely in the background. It adds to the serene mood and helps sessions feel like short stints rather than the long stretches they turn into. It’s easy to pass time in this world. However, if you’re looking for a way to revisit the soundtrack outside of the water, you won’t find that in this title.

Endless Ocean Luminous still offers plenty to do, helping to justify its high price tag (it’s a first-party published title, after all). Apart from creature logs, photos, and shared dives, you can also salvage for sunken items. There are 340 of these to discover, which fills out another separate log. You can also purchase different suits for your diver by using coins earned by scanning. Plus, there’s a fourth mode I haven’t mentioned yet (were you keeping count?). This is Event Dives, which are special time-limited dives that present you with unique opportunities to encounter rare underwater life. It helps generate a community feel to the proceedings, again providing a sense of belonging when you share these events with other players. And who knows what you might find while you’re down there?

Overall, Endless Ocean Luminous is an extremely relaxing way to spend your time. It’s easy to lose yourself in this environment and enjoy the interesting creatures sharing your space. While it’s not necessarily for everyone, newcomers like myself should enjoy it. There’s no doubt this is a fun experience, even if some elements might not appeal to fans of previous entries. Still, I genuinely enjoyed my time in the water. And I’ll continue diving for some time to come.

What’s happening on the Nintendo Switch eShop this week? Minecraft is celebrating its 15th birthday with 50% off three titles until June 4. Plus, Braid gets an update and Lorelei takes us on a puzzle-adventure through Europe.

Happy birthday, Minecraft! It’s hard to believe this blocky series has been around for 15 years. It’s easy, though, to see the influence Minecraft has had on gaming culture. Many people grew up with this crafty world, and this month marks the perfect time to celebrate all things Minecraft. With that in mind, there are some decent discounts on existing titles for the Switch, so if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to grab yourself a bargain, this is it!

Meanwhile, Lorelei is a non-linear puzzle affair that presents a third-person adventure about illusions. It sounds like a mysterious, somewhat creepy outing, with an enigma just waiting to be solved.

Remember Braid? If not, that might be because this 2008 title didn’t appear on a Nintendo console. Thankfully, this anniversary edition sets things straight by heading to the Switch. This revamped platformer sounds has been given quite the refresh, with completely new graphics and hours of commentary from the developers.

Did you know it’s been a whole year since Tears of the Kingdom was released? It might be hard to believe so much time has passed, but Nintendo is celebrating by providing a special digital wallpaper and keychain reward. Check it out online via the details below. Oh, and be sure to tune into the Pure Nintendo Podcast on Monday when we revisit Tears of the Kingdom, too.

With that, let’s find out what else has appeared on the Switch eShop. Which games are you playing this weekend?

Little Kitty, Big City is a third-person platformer for the Nintendo Switch. It serves as the debut game for indie developer studio Double Dagger, taking a cute cat and dropping it into a big city ripe for exploration. I had to continually drag myself away from the game to write this review, so it’s safe to assume this is a fun time.

The plot is simple; our feline protagonist has fallen from the lofty heights of a high-rise apartment window. The aim is to find your way home. Simple enough, right? Unfortunately our pampered pet lacks the energy for such a climb, leading to an adventure full of surprises as you work your way through the city in search of energy-giving food.

Little Kitty, Big City - Nintendo Switch - Screen 4

Little Kitty, Big City emulates the movements of a cat very well. As I explored, I felt like I was, in fact, controlling a cat. The way you walk on all fours, bat at things with your paws, and jump all feel authentic and easy to do. There are other kitty moves to discover as well, such as stretching, meowing, sleeping, licking, and more. If you’re a cat person, you’ll adore trying each of these.

Moves are not the only collectible. In fact, there’s a ton of items to find and collect in Little Kitty, Big City. A handy to-do list shows your main objectives for the story while a cat-chievements list provides 39 optional achievements. These are often humorous, like dumpster diving or sitting in a certain number of boxes (as cats do). You can also recycle cans, give bones to dogs, snap pics of yourself with a phone, and much more.

These details are what make the game enjoyable. There’s an innocence to running through the streets and climbing buildings as a cat, and a feeling of exhilaration when you find something in the most obscure of places. It reminds me a little of my time with LEGO City Undercover in terms of seeking out hidden items in every nook and cranny. If you enjoy exploration, you’ll be similarly entertained.

Little Kitty, Big City - Nintendo Switch - Screen 3

My favorite collectibles are the 40 different hats. Of course, we all know dressing kitties in real life is, well, painful (surely, I’m not the only kid who forced clothes on their cat). But in Little Kitty, Big City, our little black cat loves wearing hats. And they’re adorable. I won’t spoil what they are because half the fun is finding each and every one. I also love the pun-tastic descriptions that accompany their discovery.

Another enjoyable component are the NPCs you meet along the way. These take the form of other animals, from birds and dogs to lizards and bugs. Each has a story to tell (the ducks are particularly interesting) and usually provide Kitty with a mission of some sort. I also commend the developers on the writing. I appreciate dialogue that serves as entertainment rather than being superfluous and easily skippable. I genuinely wanted to see what each character had to say, with some clever quips that made me chuckle.

The jazzy soundtrack is also worth mentioning. Little Kitty, Big City is a relaxing adventure; there are no life meters, deaths, or boss fights. In fact, there are no fights of any kind. Although you can catch birds, this is a playful maneuver after which the birds fly away unharmed, leaving you with a collectible feather. The goal is simply to explore and have fun, and the music suits this mood perfectly. The twinkling upbeat tunes settle neatly into the background, providing the perfect backdrop for your cat-based adventure.

There’s a map available for finding your way around town. If I could make any suggestions for improvement, it would be to the map. There’s technically nothing wrong with it; it provides a simple way to navigate the streets. However, it only shows a few icons, which disappear once you’ve found the item in question. There’s no text nor any way to interact with the map. I’d love to see the option to pin a location I’d like to revisit, or zoom in and out, or add a navigation point to direct me somewhere. This isn’t a sprawling world à la Tears of the Kingdom, but I still feel like some small enhancements could improve the experience.

The other thing I need to mention is the price. At US$24.99, this adventure seems a little too expensive for me. It’s a shame, because I think if it was just $5 cheaper, it would be a more reasonable outlay. I adore this game, but it does have a short runtime of under 10 hours. While there’s plenty to do and it’s a blast to play, I wonder if it would find more success with a slightly cheaper price tag. Perhaps future DLC will help cover this cost; I would certainly welcome any reason to revisit this delightful city and its cute inhabitants.

Overall, Little Kitty, Big City is an enjoyable platformer that successfully emulates playing the role of a cat. This sweet and relaxing game provides plenty to do in an easy-to-navigate environment that’s ripe for exploring. I appreciate the work the developers have put into this, and I hope they get a chance to create similar titles in the future.

This week on the Pure Nintendo Podcast, Jemma and Kirk talk about a couple of water-based titles out this week, including Another Crab’s Treasure and Endless Ocean: Luminous.

Last week, we revisited Jemma’s trip in Japan, including a discussion about the amazing Super Nintendo World. This week, we take things under the ocean to discuss a couple of recently released titles set underwater.

Endless Ocean: Luminous is the third in the series, presenting a relaxing scuba-diving adventure with over 500 creatures to catalogue. Meanwhile, Another Crab’s Treasure may look cute on the surface, but it’s actually a tough Soulslike experience featuring difficult battles and plenty of collectibles.

We also delve into the altest Zelda movie news, with director Wes Ball giving fans hope that he’s taking it seriously as a fan himself. Plus, keen eyes online have spotted a new ESRB rating for something called Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. Is this a new Remix-style game coming our way soon?
