Hopefully you found something to look forward to in today’s Nintendo Indie Direct. If not, here’s another bit of news that was featured only in the Japan Direct; the co-op platformer Bread & Fred will be served on Nintendo Switch on May 23, 2024.

Along with its promise of “chaos and catchy tunes,” Bread & Fred will allows players to “…experience the breathtaking highs and frosty face-planting lows of Bread & Fred on the go, with even more adventure awaiting atop the icy peaks!” Nintendo games will be able to meet the newest member of the mountaintop crew, Pol the Polar Bear, and will feature 10 all-new time trial challenges that can unlock special rewards.

And just what is Bread & Fred? Well…

Bundle up for the tandem-trek of a lifetime as Bread and Fred, pint-sized penguin pals, embark on a journey to the top of the summit. Intrepid climbers land heart-pounding jumps, clear sprawling gaps, and maneuver slippery platforms, all while attached at the hip to a (hopefully) trusty partner. Communicate via in-game emojis to count down every jump.

Find the perfect penguin partner and clear record-setting runs together in Speedrun Mode. Interested in a single-player solo climb? Swap out a penguin pal for Jeff the Rock to sling and jump-throw across the slippery slopes.

Music plays an important part in the overall experience, and will feature selections ranging from  smooth jazz to hip-hop. The “Super Duper Ultra Redux” mixtape featuring an hour of tracks from gaming composers such as Grant Kirkhope (GoldenEye, Donkey Kong 64), Chipper Hammond (composer, Turbo Overkill), and Tim Stoney (Assassin’s Creed: Origins). Players will be able to chose the perfect song for every climb. The official soundtrack will be available on all major music streaming services.

To learn more about Bread & Fred, visit the official website at breadandfred.com.

Today’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase highlighted a wide variety of games coming to the Switch in the coming months. One of the more surprising of these (well, surprising if you haven’t been following social media) is Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This repackaged and expanded release of SMTV is due on Switch June 21st.

In addition to the including the full original game, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will allows players to follow a new story that was untold in the original. In addition to new areas, demons, and music, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will also feature more accessible gameplay, an improved battle system, new demon experiences, and greater field exploration.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance delivers a full-fledged RPG that can be enjoyed by existing and new fans. At the start of the game, players will choose between two paths: the story told in Shin Megami Tensei V, the Canon of Creation, or the brand-new Canon of Vengeance. This dramatic new tale of revenge introduces brand-new characters, an enigmatic cohort of demons called the Qadištu, a new dungeon and map to explore. Additionally, the original Shin Megami Tensei V battle system, demon merging and field exploration have been evolved and expanded in this newest entry in the series.

The Canon of Vengeance follows the game’s original scenarios, but will change drastically in the latter half of the game and provide a completely different outcome. Additionally, new demons will be distributed via DLC on the release date, as will DLC that makes it easier to gain experience and in-game currency.

Although I liked the game overall, my review of the original Shin Megami Tensei V came in on the lower end compared to my peers, as I was put off by the opening slog and my general lack of concern for the game’s characters. More accessible gameplay could certainly help new players push past that, and the additional story will be welcome for those who reached the original conclusion.

The big question, of course, is whether all this will be enough for players of the original release to double dip. Atlus has not yet announced the price for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, just that physical pre-orders will open on February 27th with digital pre-orders to come at a later date. We will keep you posted at Pure Nintendo, of course, but you should probably sign up for updates at atlus.com/smt5v.

After a flurry of speculation and bogus posts on your various social media channels, Nintendo has confirmed what we’ve all been hoping for—their (somewhat) traditional September Nintendo Direct.

The event will be streamed live at 10am EDT, 7am PDT, on Thursday, September 14th. The times were posted with the statement that the event will feature “… roughly 40 minutes of information focused on Nintendo Switch games releasing this winter.”

We could offer our thoughts on what Switch owners can expect tomorrow, but we all know there’s not much point to that other than the fun of speculation. That, and what I’m hoping for tends to not gel with what the Nintendoverse wants. You want F-Zero and Metroid Prime 4, I want even more Fire Emblem, and a revival of the Trauma Center franchise. There is no right or wrong.

We do know that Super Mario Bros. Wonder got it’s own Direct a couple weeks ago, and that clears up the event’s 40 minute run time to focus other Nintendo and third-party games. So, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Nintendo gamers can each decide exactly what those games will be by visiting http://ninten.do/60129e87e at their local time tomorrow.

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct featured the first glimpse of Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key. Switch players will have to wait until February 24, 2023, to play this final chapter in Ryza’s story arc, but KOEI TECMO America and GUST studios have now provided additional details to hold us over.

Featuring the fan-favorite alchemist, Reisalin Stout, Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key is set a year after the events of 2021’s Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy. Yashichiro Takahashi—who delivered the script for the original Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout—returns as lead writer for Ryza 3.

The latest summer escapade finds Ryza and friends enjoying their peaceful lives on Kurken Island when they hear news that a mysterious group of islands have appeared in nearby waters. It turns out that these islands, known as Kark Isles, are having a negative effect on their homeland, so Ryza and her friends quickly set out to investigate. But when their investigation leads to an enormous gate deep within strange ruins, Ryza hears a haunting voice in her head that wants to lead her to the ‘Code of the Universe’. Who is talking to her and what lies beyond the gate?

While uncovering the mysteries of Kark Isles, Ryza and her friends will explore four regions in a new “open field” – all explorable with seamless transitions! As players travel through these beautiful and vast sprawling landscapes and vistas, they will find mysterious keys that will aid them on their adventure. There are various types of keys that can be found and created, useful for exploration, synthesis and battle. Each key has a different effect, so players will want to try experimenting with them as the keys to unlocking the island’s secrets are now in your hands.

One of the joys of the Atelier series—and especially the “Secret” series—is exploration, so the “open field” approach is sure to appeal to fans.

Of course, the wonderfully written characters are also key, and players will be happy to know that a total of eleven party members—both new and returning—will be featured. These, of course, include Ryza, Klaudia, Tao, and Lent. More characters will be revealed in the coming months.

In addition to standard physical and digital version, a Premium Box of Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key will be available exclusively through the NISA Online Store. This version will contain an artbook, original illustration B2 cloth poster, special clear file (set of 2), mini acrylic character charm, early access DLC code for Ryza’s “Marine Look of Kurken Shore” costume, and a copy of the game all packed into a beautiful collectable box.

Those who do stick with the physical or digital copies can get a special set of seven Summer Look costume as early purchase bonus if they buy the game within two weeks after launch. If you miss it, no worries; these costumes may be available for purchase at a later date.

For more information on Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key, check out the official TGS Livestream on September 16 at 19:00 JST or visit koeitecmoamerica.com/ryza3/.

Today’s Nintendo Direct gave Switch owners a lot to look forward to, and amongst the more exciting announcements is that KOEI TECMO is finally bringing Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse to western audiences in remastered form.

The original 2008 Wii release was exclusive to Japan, but will now be available worldwide for multiple consoles, including Nintendo Switch.

FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse takes place a decade after five girls mysteriously disappeared at a festival on Rōgetsu Isle, an island in southern Japan. While all of the girls were eventually rescued, their memories were lost, with only the faint remembrance of a single melody and a seemingly possessed masked woman dancing in the moonlight. Now, ten years later, with still no memory of the events surrounding their disappearance, two of the five girls have died — discovered with covered faces and found in a tragic, crying pose. The remaining three girls now head off to the eerie island to solve the mystery of their friends’ death, while also unlocking the mystery of the memories left behind.

As the girls explore the western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on Rōgetsu Isle, they will rely on the moonlight and a faint flashlight to search for clues. The story progresses by discovering relics like old newspaper articles and notes that help the girls unravel the island’s secret past. While exploring, the girls will also be confronted by a series of spirits. They will need to use a FATAL FRAME franchise classic, the Camera Obscura, to repel vengeful ghosts, sealing away their power by photographing them. Throughout the game, the girls will need to equip stronger lenses and change out different films in order to capture the most powerful spirits, while also using the camera to capture “things that cannot be seen” to help them find the evidence they need to remember their haunting past.

As is customary with the series—including last year’s remaster of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water—the remastered version of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse will include an all-new Photo Mode, new and altered (queue the goofy censorship “concerns”) costumes, and enhanced graphics to deliver “…a more immersive and frightening experience.”

In addition, in-game movies and character models have been brushed-up to deliver a story that shines, both narratively and aesthetically as the three remaining girls attempt to rediscover their past before becoming victims once again.

No official release date has been announced, but we’ll be sure to let you know when KOEI TECMO updates the current “early 2023” designation. Until then, fans can keep an eye on  www.koeitecmoamerica.com/fatalframe/mask/ for more information.

NieR:Automata: The End of YoRHa Edition was a pretty safe bet for today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase. Square Enix’s surprise for the day came in the form of their brand-new life simulation RPG, Harvestella.

We’ll start with the former. Available now for digital and physical pre-order, the post-apocalyptic action RPG NieR:Automata: The End of YoRHa Edition will launch October 6, 2022.

The physical edition will feature symbolic artwork by Character Designer Akihiko Yoshida on the front cover and will include new reversible box art featuring A2, designed by Concept Artist Koda Kazuma.

The critically acclaimed NieR:Automata, directed by YOKO TARO and developed by PlatinumGames Inc. in partnership with SQUARE ENIX, delivers a masterful mix of action and RPG gameplay through a gripping, thought-provoking storyline. Players battle as androids 2B, 9S and A2 in order to reclaim the world from the machine lifeforms and uncover long-forgotten truths about humanity. NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition features the award-winning base game and the 3C3C1D119440927 DLC, which includes three challenging colosseums and additional costumes. Players can also download the free 6C2P4A118680823 DLC when the game arrives to the Nintendo Switch. This Nintendo Switch exclusive DLC features six new costumes and four new accessories that can change appearances of your playable characters. It also includes two pod skins based on characters from the popular mobile title NieR Re[in]carnation.

More information is available at nierautomata.square-enix-games.com.

Following a month after the release of NieR:Automata, Harvestella will arrive for Switch on November 4, 2022. In this new life simulation RPG, players will experience a beautiful world that changes with the flow of the seasons as they tend to crops, befriend townspeople and explore challenging dungeons.

The game will feature concept art by Isamu Kamikokuryo (FINAL FANTASY® XII) and music by Go Shiina (Tales series). In HARVESTELLA,

HARVESTELLA is set in a vibrant and colourful world where four giant crystals called “Seaslight” create a stable change between the four seasons. The adventure begins as abnormalities in the Seaslight begin to appear, creating the “Quietus,” a season of death that takes place between the naturally occurring four seasons. During the Quietus the crops wither and people cannot venture outside, and troublingly, these seasons are mysteriously growing longer with each year.

In this life simulation RPG, players will grow and tend to crops, use ingredients to cook and craft items, and venture into the overworld, which vibrantly changes based on the season, to visit different towns, interact with townsfolk, go fishing and more. Players can select from various Jobs, such as Fighter, Shadow Walker, and Mage, and venture into dungeons with their party to discover the origins of the world as well as the truth behind the calamity along the way.

Harvestella will be available in digital and physical editions, with pre-orders opening at “a later time.” For more information, visit www.harvestella.com.

Just a few weeks after social media mocked the very idea of Persona on Nintendo Switch, Persona is coming to Nintendo Switch. The big announcement to close today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase is that ATLUS is finally bringing the critically acclaimed Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable to Nintendo gamers.

Things will kick off October 21, 2022, with the release of Persona 5 Royal.

Persona 5 Royal: Forced to transfer to a high school in Tokyo, the protagonist has a strange dream. “You truly are a prisoner of fate. In the near future, ruin awaits you.” With the goal of “rehabilitation” looming overhead, he must save others from distorted desires by donning the mask of a Phantom Thief.

The Switch version of Persona 5 Royal will include all previously released DLC.

We’ll then move on to…

Persona 4 Golden: They say your soulmate will appear if you stare into a television set on a rainy night… This strange rumor slowly spreads through the rural town of Inaba, the protagonist’s new home, just as a chain of mysterious murders begin. As the protagonist and his teammates chase after the truth, they find themselves opening the door to another world.

For the first time, enjoy Persona 4 Golden with text in French, Italian, German, and Spanish!

Persona 3 Portable: If I say there’s an hour “hidden” between one day and the next…would you believe me? This unknown time is the “Dark Hour.” Unfamiliar stillness swallows the city, people turn into eerie coffins, and otherworldly monsters called Shadows swarm. One night, the protagonist is attacked by these Shadows. When all hope seems lost, the power of the heart, their Persona, is awakened.

Featuring enhanced graphics, Persona 3 Portable will also be available with French, Italian, German, and Spanish text for the first time!

Release dates for Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable have not been announced.

We’re just a little over a month away from the launch of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for the Switch, and Nintendo wants to make sure you’re good and hyped (as if JRPG fans aren’t already losing their mind from the wait).

This Wednesday, June 22nd, Nintendo will air a 20 minute Nintendo Direct dedicated specifically to Xenoblade Chronicles. The livestream will start at 10am EDT. They haven’t provided details about which aspects of the game will receive focus, but we can anticipate more on the setting and battle system.

Nintendo has dropped the occasional character profile and soundtrack pieces via social media since announcing the game, so it’s likely we’ll get a roundup of that information, as well.

Fans of the series will recall a slew of videos released ahead of the Xenoblade Chronicles X release to introduce that game’s intricate gameplay elements and wonderful use of the Wii U Gamepad, so it’s possible the direct could serve as a bit of an early tutorial. We know Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will combine gameplay elements from previous XC titles, and it’ll be exciting to learn how those will tie together.

Whatever Nintendo decides to show us, it’ll just make the crawl towards the game’s release on July 29th seem that much slower (perhaps even as slow as their website during the initial Special Edition pre-order opening attempt).

The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Nintendo Direct will be available via livestream from Nintendo’s website. For more information on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, visit www.nintendo.com.

The latest Nintendo Direct has happened! Did you tune in? A ton of information was dropped on fans, including a Splatoon 3 trailer and the announcement of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. One of the biggest surprises, though, was a whole swag of DLC coming to everyone’s favorite racer, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

We won’t have to wait long, either, with the first round of tracks due on March 18, 2022. There are six release “waves” planned to be staggered over the course of the next two years. Each wave features eight tracks for a grand total of 48. Phwoar!

This will be the first DLC we’ve seen for the Switch version of the game, which came pre-packaged with the original Wii U DLC. Those packs included two paid DLCs that were originally released in 2014 and 2015, bringing The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing into the Mario Kart fold.

It’s an exciting time for fans. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, making it five years since we’ve seen anything new for Mario Kart – and the Switch version is a port (a good port, to be sure). Of course, that’s not including Mario Kart’s mobile version, which itself looks to have made a big enough impact to bring some its own fine courses to the Switch.

The first lot of DLC includes none other than Mario Kart Tour’s Toyko Blur, one the mobiel game’s tracks inspired by real-world cities. This track will debut on the Switch along with the Wii’s Coconut Mall and N64’s Choco Mountain, plus five other tracks over two cups:

Golden Dash Cup

  • Paris Promenade (Mario Kart Tour)
  • Toad Circuit (Mario Kart 3DS)
  • Choco Mountain (Mario Kart 64)
  • Coconut Mall (Mario Kart Wii)

Lucky Cat Cup

  • Tokyo Blur (Mario Kart Tour)
  • Shroom Ridge (Mario Kart DS)
  • Sky Garden (Mario Kart Advance)
  • Ninja Hideaway (Mario Kart Tour).

The DLC will cost US$24.99, however you can also access the content for free if you’re a Nintendo Switch Online member with the Expansion Pack.
