Welcome to a new year of gaming with Pure Nintendo! We hope your new year has started with a bang! Our first playlist for 2023 includes everything from sailing adventures to Mario Kart, with a healthy does of TMNT for good measure.

That’s right, sailing. Sail Forth is here to bring an open-world adventure to the waters. With a Windwaker feel to it, plenty of isles to discover, and even dolphins to follow, this is quite a unique title.

Oh, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – is there anything you can’t do? This game showed a renewed interest from the team last year thanks to the first three waves of DLC content. We got together for a game night recently and spent a lot of time on the road. It’s as good as ever; and now that we’ve had so many new tracks to enjoy, revisiting the original feels fresh again!

With two major releases last year, Pokémon is bound to be on our playlist for a while. We’re playing both 2022 titles as we continue to enjoy Arceus and Scarlet/Violet. Who knows what 2023 holds for this franchise?

The only question left to ask is: which games are you playing at the moment? Perhaps this year will be the year you can catch up on that backlog … we tell ourselves the same thing every year! For now, let us know the titles on your playlist.

Pure Nintendo playlist

Roger

  • Sail Forth (Switch) – Really enjoying this sailing game – it’s got some Windwaker Vibes. I love how it’s an open world, and while there’s a story to be told in this game, a lot of how the narrative unfolds is how you play the game, making your own adventures.

Kirk

  • Children of Silentown (Switch) – Nearing the end of this puzzle adventure ahead of its January 11t release, and I’ll be sad when it’s over. If you’ve ever loved a Daedalic game, you’ll love this one, too. My review next week will have all the wonderful details.
  • Rumble Fish 2 (Switch) – I don’t normally go for arcade fighting games, but our original reviewer was injured in…we’ll say training…so I’m stepping into the fight. We’ll find out soon enough whether I’m able to go the distance.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch) – My family’s traditional New Year’s Eve gaming night rekindled our interest in this, and that means we’ll be spamming it for a while. I’ve given up on ever beating my kids in some of the games, but I think I can take them in golf with a little more practice.

Trev

  • Mario Kart 8 DX (Switch) – I posted a highlight of this on the PN Twitter, so be sure to check it out.
  • Papetura (Switch) – This is quite a good game, and if my review isn’t posted by the time this list is up, it will be soon after.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) – My runner-up for GOTY, I’ve been slowly building my Pokedex…when my wife isn’t busy playing; she’s well ahead of me.
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – A favorite among the PN crew, I got to play online a bit with Jemma and Justin. I’ll need to revisit The Cowabunga Collection next and check out the update.

Jemma

  • Pokémon Violet (Switch) – I am loving this game. It just makes me happy. The music, the vast open spaces, the Pokémon.. it’s just pure joy. I’m still working my way through the Titans, so this is a game I’ll be playing for some time!
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – I can never get enough Mario Kart, but the latest DLC gives us all a pretty good reason to pick it up again! We spent some time with new and old courses in a recent Pure Nintendo game night. Sorry, Trev! You can also read my thoughts on wave 3 of the booster course pass.
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – This was one of my highlights of 2022 and another game night inclusion. It’s so satisfying to play with friends!
  • River City Girls 2 (Switch) – I’m reviewing this interesting beat ’em up at the moment. It has so many postives, but one negative that unfortunately mars the experience. Watch for my review soon!
  • Bravery and Greed (Switch) – Another review title, this is a fun roguelike with great pixel graphics and lots of plundering to do. Watch for my upcoming review!

So kind of Nintendo to track how many hours we spend playing video games each year, isn’t? My parents wouldn’t like to see such numbers, but I’m a grown adult now with kids of my own, so they’ll just have to cope with 176 hours I spent on one game alone. I’m sure many others can boast a lot more than that.

But the games are fun to talk about, and even more fun to justify. So, here are the most played Nintendo Switch games of 2022 from some of the Pure Nintendo staffers. Big thanks to Nintendo and all of the developers who gave us titles worthy of double…nay, triple digit gaming hours.

Jemma Casson

  • Splatoon 3: This was my first foray into the world of Splatoon, and I’m glad I finally made it! Somehow, this ended up being my most-played title of the year, probably because it’s just pure fun. I spent a lot of time online despite those pesky server issues.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Unsurprisingly, Mario Kart featured prominently in my gaming lists of 2022. Firstly, because it happens to be one of my favorite games, period. Secondly, because the new DLC has breathed new life into this title. And I can’t wait to see what’s next!
  • Pokemon Unite: Another surprise. It was only thanks to a Pure Nintendo game night earlier in the year that I even discovered this game. I quickly became addicted, playing a round or two most nights for many months. It’s super-competitive, yet absolutely fun. And how cute do those pocket monsters look with little outfits on?

Trevor Gould

  • Pinball FX3 – This has made my “most played list” every year since its release. And thanks to the addition of Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure back in March, it returns. I’d score it even higher than Kirk, but I can’t criticize any review that also gives a shout-out to Police Force. Is a lone table enough to make my personal top 10? We’ll soon find out when we record our GOTY podcast.
  • Sonic Origins – I did a 6-page spread on this collection in issue #62 of PNM, and my playtime shows I was indeed thorough. With the extras and improvements (for Sonic CD especially), I anticipate talking more about this collection shortly.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 24 tracks across three waves in 2022!?! Let that sink in for a minute. What else can I say? A favorite of many, I’ve no doubt this will make a few top 10s.
  • Mega Man Legacy Collections – These represent another big PNM spread (co-authored by Jes), and it makes me happy to know that the magazine is getting my A-game, so to speak. These oldies are still goodies!
  • Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration – I don’t hand out 9 out of 10 scores too often, but this one deserves it. The fact that it only came out last month and still snuck into my “most played list” shows it did something right.

Kirk Hiner

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Was there really ever any doubt? The Xenoblade Chronicles games have  topped these lists since before Nintendo was filing these reports—one of them three times now! I’m 176 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 3 with plenty of DLC to go. Will it top my most played games of 2023, too? Not if Atelier Ryza 3 and Breath of the Wild 2 have anything to say about it.
  • Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes – 81 hours and I only bothered addressing one hope! I still haven’t enjoyed a Warriors game as much as Warriors Orochi 3: Hyper on the Wii U, and I haven’t enjoyed a Fire Emblem game as much as Radiant Dawn on the Wii, but these franchise mash-ups have been worth at least one play-through.
  • The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles – I started this with my daughter, Sophie, for her review in 2021, but she finished it on her own. After she went off to college, I decided to complete what I missed. I’m glad I did, because it was a hoot throughout. 72 hours was likely too much, but some of that was spent sleeping with the game still running. Have I mentioned before that I’m old?

Jes Taylor

  • Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope – I adored the first Mario + Rabbids game, and the sequel is bigger and better in every way (except getting rid of Yoshi as a playable character; come on Ubisoft!!). From the redesigned combat movement, to the great story full of Mario Easter-eggs, to that amazing soundtrack, Sparks of Hope might be on my list for GOTY. I 100% Sparks of Hope and spent (checks notes) 62 hours having fun with Mario and the Rabbids.
  • Splatoon 3 – Awesome multiplayer improvements? Check. Great single player campaign? Check. Big Man?? Check. Splatoon 3 was a blast to play, and I sunk a lot of hours into the game—surprisingly more hours into the card battle mode than I ever would have thought. Overall, I surpassed the 56 hour mark on Splatoon 3 thanks to that last SplatFest. (Although I feel like there’s a certain Pure Nintendo staffer who has me beat…by a few hundred hours.)
  • Overwatch 2 – I played a lot of Overwatch when it first came out, but played a crazy amount of the game when it went free-to-play in October. While Overwatch 2 isn’t for everyone, I had a blast playing the game with friends. It surprisingly snuck up on my most-played list.
  • Bear and Breakfast – Easily one of my most anticipated games of 2022, Bear and Breakfast lived up to all expectations and more! I put in 38 hours on the Switch version alone (with another 57 hours on PC). Now the devs are adding new content in their Winter Update and Spring Update? Sign me up! Is Bear and Breakfast a surprise GOTY for me? Who knows?
  • Shoutout to Mega Man Legacy Collection! I co-authored a big PNM spread with Trev celebrating Mega Man’s 35th anniversary. It’s one of the few times I can remember playing, and completing, 11 games in a 3 week period of time. It was crazy fun, and I’m glad we agreed Mega Man 2 is the best.

Wondering what the Pure Nintendo team is playing at the moment? Our latest playlist includes everything from the latest TMNT outing to some pre-Splatoon 3 fun.

With the Cowabunga Collection recently released, it’s no surpise this assembly of classic titles caught our attention. It boasts no less than 13 TMNT games, from the NES original to fan favorite TMNT IV: Turtles in Time – both the SNES and arcade versions.

Meanwhile, we’ve been prepping for the imminent release of Splatoon 3 with some Splatoon 2 love, as well as enjoying the recent Splatoon 3 demo. We wonder if our own Splatoon specialist Nyleak can match her hours with the latest entry in the series when it hits the Switch later this week!

Whether you’re seeking inspiration or simply curious about what we’re playing recently, check out our playlist below to see which games we can’t put down lately. But more importantly – what are you playing right now? How’s your own playlist progressing? Let us know in the comments section!

Pure Nintendo playlist

Roger

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (Switch) – One of my favorite games is TMNT: IV Turtles in Time, so it was a no brainer to pick up The Cowabunga Collection. I never played the arcade version of the game, but it’s quite different than the console version; I prefer the console one. I never played any of the Gameboy games, so it’ll be interesting to see how those hold up.
  • Splatoon 2 (Switch) – Last weekend, I played quite a bit of Splatoon 3, and I can’t wait for the game to release. In the meantime, I’ll be honing my skills in Splatoon 2.

Ted

  • Idol Manager (Switch) – currently reviewing this for PN. It’s too early to give any real initial thoughts, but I’m afraid that I might become a little bit addicted…. gotta get my stars to #1!
  • Fall Guys & Fortnite (Switch) – I’ve managed to get a few of my friends and my fiancée into both, which has made both a go-to most evenings. Whether than be on my Switch or PC (as my fiancée has become a little obsessed with Animal Crossing). If anyone wants to squad up on Fortnite or Fall Guys – lemme know!

Jes

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (Switch) – I grew up playing these games on the NES and SNES and boy, is it a blast to go back to the! It’s taking me a few minutes to remember just how challenging the games can be, but how rewarding they are as well. The amazing music and abundance of games means I’ll be sticking with this collection for sometime.
  • Wave Race 64 (Nintendo Switch Online) – I have a lot of fond memories of playing this game endlessly back on Nintendo 64 and so it’s been fun going back to this title. It’s another example of a game that’s harder than I remember but once you get the hang of it, it’s a blast to go back and play. We’ll see how well I do in the latter Grand Prix races though..

Nyleak

  • Pokémon Legends Arceus (Switch) – I know I’m late to the party, but I finally borrowed a friends copy of Pokémon Arceus and I have been playing it non-stop. I’ve had a lot of fun exploring and trying to complete my Pokédex. I’m coming up on the end of the main story but I’m trying to prolong as much as I can before beating the game. I REALLY wish some more Pokémon from gen 1 would make an appearance. Especially the starters.

Kirk

  • The DioField Chronicle (Switch demo) – Need to work through this demo to determine if it’s worth buying this month. I’m more of a turn-based battle guy than real time, but the high melodrama, grandiose scope, and flamboyant unit design (not to mention the ridiculous character names) are pushing the right buttons so far.
  • Little Orpheus (Switch) – They had me at “…inspired by classic movies like Flash Gordon…” I have yet to see any bore worms in this action platformer, but we’ll see if they show up before the game releases on September 13. Watch for my PN review at that time.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch) – I just finished the story this week, so I’ll cool off on Xenoblade for a bit. The lure of the post game content, however, is bound to draw me back very quickly. There are a certain couple of heroes I need to unlock. (edited)

Trev

  • Nintendo Switch Online – I finally upgraded to the expansion pack, so I’ve been playing a trio of N64 games. Solo, I’ve been enjoying Yoshi’s Story and Mario Kart 64. Online, I had fun playing Dr. Mario 64 with Justin and Jemma.
  • PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC (Switch) – My latest review game, and a good one. I’ve always been a fan of ol’ Pac, and his first 3D platforming adventure grew on me the longer I played.
  • Super Kirby Clash (Switch) – Another game I enjoyed online recently with the PN crew. I played this quite a lot on 3DS, and it’s still fun on the Switch.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (Switch) – I grew tired of waiting for Target to begin processing my order. So after a quick cancelation and drive to GameStop, I’m finally enjoying the “heroes in a halfshell.” The amount of content plus the nostalgia is vast, so I expect this will stay in my Switch for a while.

Jemma

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection (Switch) – like my colleagues, I was way too excited about this collection. I only just purchased it today though, so I jumped straight into TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, of course. It came back to me straight away; it’s like riding a bike!
  • Dr. Mario 64 (Switch Online Expansion) – Like Trev, I recently upgraded my subscription – finally! – to include the Expansion Pack. Justin, Trev and I spent some time playing Dr. Mario online, which was super fun and very competitive.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) – My family and I went away for the weekend, which usually means a few rounds of this Mario platformer. Despite completing it many times, it’s still enjoyable, though I do wish for a new entry in the series!
  • River City Saga: Three Kingdoms (Switch) – I’m currently reviewing this beat ’em up, which takes the classic River City Saga characters and thrusts them into ancient China. Part RPG, part brawler, there’s a fun journey ahead, despite a few flaws.
  • Dyna Bomb 2 (Switch) – Another review, this platformer provides more than I expected as you blast your way through 60 devilishly difficult levels on an absolute colelctathon. Watch for my upcoming review!

Wondering what the Pure Nintendo team is playing at the moment? Our latest playlist includes everything from the latest Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tracks to the subtle art of fishing.

In fact, most of us were playing Mario Kart 8 this week, since the second wave of DLC dropped recently. The team got together to play online, experiencing the tracks the day they came out, and had a blast in the process. It’s a super-fun collection of courses and definitely worth checking out.

Meanwhile, some team members are prepping for the imminent release of Splatoon 3 with some Splatoon 2 time. We wonder if Kaelyn can match her hours with the latest entry in the series?

Whether you’re seeking inspiration or simply curious about what we’re playing recently, check out our playlist below to see which games we can’t put down lately. But more importantly – what are you playing right now? How’s your own playlist progressing? Let us know in the comments section!

Pure Nintendo playlist

Kaelyn

  • Coromon (Switch) – this is a game that I’m currently reviewing. If I had to write a one sentence review about this game, I would say: “If you’ve ever wanted to play Pokemon, without actually playing Pokemon, now’s your chance, with Coromon!”
  • Splatoon 2 (Switch) – I was shocked a few days ago when I checked my total hours played in Splatoon 2. I honestly had no idea that I had put over 2000 hours into this game since it was released. People probably think I just sit here and play Splatoon all day. But the matches in Splatoon are so fast (under 5 minutes) that I am able to play whenever I need to pass time. Waiting on food to cook, play some Splatoon. A 10 minute break from work, play Splatoon, etc. It has been my go to game for so long; and it’s a good, fast way to get my mind off of reality. After watching the Splatoon 3 Direct I am so excited for the next installment in the series. New abilities, weapons and levels. Not to mention splatfests! I forgot how exciting those were! I can’t wait until next month!

Ted

  • KUUKIYOMI 1,2 and 3 (Switch) – Consider It: I stumbled across this series by purchasing KUUKIYOMI 2 as it was on sale on the eShop. These games are kind of hard to explain. You’ve a round of ten ‘mini games’ where you must consider what to do. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing, but you must ‘consider it’ fast. Each mini game is super unique and hilarious. My fiancée and I ended up buying all three and have so much fun almost every night just jumping and doing a small session together.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – Dived back in to check the new tracks out. Mario Kart is never not fun, and these new tracks just breathe so much fresh air into the game. I am by no means great at MK8, but I’ve been trying my luck online recently and doing pretty good! Anyone up for a race?

Kirk

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch) – On the Sunday after release, my son and I spent a collective 15 hours with this game…a record on the Switch. The characters aren’t as engaging as in previous Xenoblade Chronicles games (Zeke for the win), but all is forgiven when we’re on a quest with Gray.
  • The DioField Chronicle demo (Switch) – Once I catch up to my son’s progress in XC3 I’m going to start putting this game through its paces. I’m not the diehard fan of Square Enix that many tactical strategy and JRPG fans are, but I love a good battle system and a heavy dose of melodrama, and The DioField Chronicle looks to provide both.

Roger

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – With the new tracks, of course I had to go back to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The new tracks feel great and I’m excited to see what other tracks are planned for the future.
  • KOKORO CLOVER Season 1 (Switch) – I really like games that take a chance and try to do something different, and Kokoro Clover Season 1 does just that. It’s set up like you’re watching a Saturday morning cartoon, with over the top characters, and I’m liking it so far! Stay tuned for a review soon.

Trev

  • Gale of Windoria (Switch) – If my review isn’t already up by the time you read this, it will be shortly after. It’s another KEMCO-published RPG, which fans should appreciate while others will be apathetic.
  • Growbot (Switch) – I finally published my review this week; a good game with some great visuals.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – I enjoyed checking out the new DLC with Jemma, Justin, and Katie. Hope to have another PN game night soon. Which of the new tracks is your favorite?

Justin

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch) – It’s fantastic! Love the sprawling world, the characters and dialogue is great and the story is all sorts of crazy but also very fun!
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – Wave 2 has been great to play. I especially love the new additions to Kalamari Desert, one of my favorite levels from Mario Kart 64.

Jemma

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – Talk about excited! I was counting down the days for new Mario Kart content, and I was not disappointed. This latest wave brings a great group of tracks to the game, with a fun mix from across the series. Check out my review of the second wave!
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (Switch) – I’ve barely scratched the surface of this hige RPG, which looks and sounds just amazing. It’s going to be a very enjoyable ride!
  • Bassmaster Fishing 2022 (Switch) – This fishing sim is a realistic take on the genre, with many real-life lakes to discover and fish to catch. If you’re serious about your fishing, you’ll enjoy this one.
  • Logic Pic (Switch) – I just reviewed this collection of picross puzzles, and what a large collection it is! With around 1000 puzlles, this is a game that’s likely to keep you coming back for a long time. Check out my Logic Pic review for the full story!
  • Boomerang Fu (Switch) – I recently dicovered this super-fun multiplayer game, which is the definition of chaos and mayhem. It’s fast and furious, and full of laughs.

Have you been wondering what the Pure Nintendo team is playing lately? Our latest playlist includes everything from Fire Emlbem and Pokémon to TMNT and soccer.

We actually found ourselves playing a lot of Pokémon, from Snap and Unite to Pinball Mini – remember that little device? Some of us might actually be addcited to Pokémon Unite. Not naming names or anything.

Other recently played games on our playlist include the Musou mayhem of Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario’s latest soccer extravaganza, plus classic Sonic the Hedgehog. Not to mention TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, which is likely to remain a playlist highlight for some time.

Whether you’re seeking inspiration or you’re simply curious about what we’ve been up to recently, check out our below playlist to see which games we’re obsessing over lately. But more importantly – what are you playing right now? How’s your backlog progressing? Let us know in the comments section below!

Pure Nintendo playlist

Ted

  • New Pokémon Snap (Switch) – Finally picked this one up in the eshop sale, and initially my girlfriend scoffed at the premise.. “all you do is take pictures of Pokémon? What a waste of money!” We spent most of yesterday fighting over whose turn it is next!! Incredibly beautiful game, and super fun when you’re trying to outscore someone!
  • Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles (Switch) – I’m a pretty big anime fan, and finished binge-watching all of Demon Slayer just as the release date for this game dropped! If you’re a fan of the anime, this is like reliving every episode – but you’re in control of the action. Super faithful and the visuals are unreal. Best looking anime-inspired game on the Switch for me!
  • Pokémon Pinball Mini (Pokémon Mini) – Who remembers this? I dug this out just to see if it works, and this game has been my addiction. You play as Diglett (or from four other unlockable characters) in way more stages than I thought there would be, to throw a Pokéball into various holes. It’s too good! The best games always draw you in with the most simple of mechanics and that “just one more go” mentality. Also, this thing fits anywhere! I reckon I’ve found myself a new member of my commute-to-work pack.

Roger

  • Little Noah: Scion of Paradise (Switch) – I picked up this roguelike after it was announced in the latest Direct. It’s a cute roguelike, but much more difficult than it first appears. I have made it to the first boss a few times now, and during my last run, I almost got him…almost.
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – I couldn’t have asked for a more authentic experience than TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. I was worried about the hype, but it lives up to my expectations. There’s some pretty deep cuts for references too. I’ve played through this a few times, I can’t get enough of it!

Trev

  • Sonic Origins (Switch) – During the past 10 days or so, most of my time has been spent beating (and replaying) the Sonic Origins collection, and I’ve been excited to do so. Please check out my detailed review for more information. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed these games; they’re a nostalgic blast! The improvements and updates benefit all of the games in this collection, but Sonic CD especially. I’m ready for a collection of the GBAs Sonic Advance Trilogy, or Sonic Mania 2.

Kirk

  • Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (Switch) – Making slow progress through this one, as I can only fight so man Musou battles in one sitting. Plus, I chose Edelgard’s route since I never played her path in Three Houses, and she’s really pretty boring. Game’s fun otherwise, though.
  • Krut: The Mythic Wings (Switch) – Making slow progress on this upcoming action platformer, too, because it’s HARD! It only has six stages, but it’ll take a lot of practice to get through them. I mean, how many platformers kick your butt with the very first enemy you face?

Jemma

  • Pokémon Unite (Switch) – This has become a go-to for me, playing it almost daily for the past few weeks. I love it. I don’t know why. I’m improving and enjoy trying new Pokémon (though Snorlax and Blastoise are my faves at the moment). It’s so satisfying to score goals and win a game! Fun, thy name is Pokémon Unite.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports (Switch) – I played this with my family last week and wow did it bring back some memories! I was right at home with tennis and bowling thanks to the Wii-era game, but volleyball and soccer were fun to learn as well.
  • Card Shark (Switch) – This is an interesting little game. Set in 18th-century France, you play card games and deceive your way to the high rollers. Watch for my upcoming review to hear my full thoughts!
  • Mario Strikers: Battle League (Switch) – It’s official; I’m terrible at this game! It’s super fun and I love the characters, costumes, and stadiums, plus scoring feels very satisfying. I probsbly just need more practice!
  • TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Switch) – this is such a fun game, it’s one I’ll probably come back to for a little while. It’s fun on your own, but add in a few other players and it’s simply fantastic.

The weekend is almost upon us, and that can only mean one thing – game time! We’re back with another playlist to highlight which games the Pure Nintendo team is playing lately.

One thing we seem to have in common this week is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, thanks to a new batch of DLC. The first wave – the Golden Dash Cup and Lucky Cat Cup – feature a lot of fun tracks previously only found in handheld form, with gems from the GBA, DS, 3DS, and MK Tour versions making their way to the Switch. As always, it’s a ton of fun and we can’t wait for more! It’s bound to be on our playlist every time.

Other playlist highlights include a few classic titles, like Dr. Mario 64 and Alien Soldier, along with a sprinkling of Zelda games (there’s always room for The Legend of Zelda, after all – check out our latest Zelda podcast if you don’t believe us).

Whether you’re looking for gaming inspiration or you’re just curious about what we’ve been up to lately, check out our playlist below to see it all. More importantly, what are you playing right now? How’s that backlog of games going anyway? Let us know in the comments section below!

Pure Nintendo playlist

Roger

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – With the release of the first wave of new tracks, I’ll be spending time honing my skills and preparing for the Pure Nintendo Cup (that’s a thing, right?)
  • Dawn of the Monsters (Switch) – A sidescrolling beat ’em up where I can play as a giant monster, taking out other giant monsters? Yes please! I love the artwork too! It’s a fun co-op. You can also check out Pure Nintendo’s Dawn of the Monsters interview.
  • Young Souls (Switch): Speaking of co-ops, I have been playing Young Souls for a review, and wow, I am really enjoying this game. Check out my Young Souls review for more details!

Ted

  • Nintendo Switch Folders (Switch) – I know it’s not a game, but I’ve had way too much fun creating folders on my Switch. I’ve got one for multiplayer games that my girlfriend and I like to play, I’ve got a Pokémon folder, I’ve got a backlog folder full of purchased games that are yet to be played, and I’ve also got a folder specifically made for my daughter. So she can head straight there and select her favourites instead of scrolling through my 140+ games!
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – I had to get my trophies in the new tracks – and also teach my five-year-old a lesson, too! Very much enjoying the new tracks and can’t wait for all the future waves.

Jes

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (switch) – I always loved Mario kart and the brand new booster course pack is exactly what I needed. The new tracks are a lot of fun and if this is how the DLC packs start, I can’t wait to see what tracks get added next.
  • Alien Soldier (Sega Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online) – Recently 3 new Sega Genesis games were added to the online pack and one of them was one of my childhood favorites, Alien Soldier. It’s an incredibly difficult game but super rewarding. I highly recommend it to people who loved Gunstar Heroes. For me I just needed another excuse to go back and play this great game.
  • F-Zero X (Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online) – F-Zero X was added to N64 Switch Online and it’s been a blast to revisit this game. Playing it online with friends has also been a unique experience, something I never imagined I would ever be able to do with this game. It’s a hard racing game but if you put in the time and patience, it’s a ton of fun. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to keep racing so I can unlock all the remaining vehicles…

Trev

  • Rune Factory 5 (Switch) – It’s my name on the byline, but my wife has played a lot more than me. See our review of this good, but not great, entry.
  • Tempest 4000 (Switch) – Now that it’s in the hands of non-press, my time atop the leaderboards has ended. But I should have a review of this one up any day now. It’s not perfect, but it’s still a very good game.
  • The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes (3DS) – I took a break from my BOTW replay, but I managed to get another TFH online session going, this time with Kaelyn and Kirk. Koopa Kast is coming up!
  • The Pinball Arcade (Wii U) – I’ve actually been playing quite a bit of pinball lately. Still, I’m highlighting this game (and the Wii U version, no less) because the Bally and Williams tables are somehow still available for purchase. I know, they lost the rights in 2018, but what can I say? Star Trek The Next Generation, and the Pinbot games are some I recommend. You can even nab games that are in Pinball FX3 for a slightly different feel.

Justin

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – Tried out the new courses with some friends over for some local couch co-op fun — the courses were solid although I’m hoping DK Mountain gets in the DLC passes somewhere, loved that course! And yes, bring on the PN Cup.
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES – Nintendo Switch Online) – After talking about A Link Between Worlds on the last Koopa Kast, I had to revisit its progenitor. What a fantastic game! Such great music, sound effects, gameplay — just loving playing through it again.
  • Dr. Mario 64 (Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online) – If you’re not playing this game, phew, you’re missing out! I don’t remember liking Dr. Mario games as much as say Tetris back in the day, but man, Dr. Mario is quickly becoming one of my favorite puzzle games.

Jemma

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – As a lifelong Mario Kart fan, there was no way I wasn’t playing this on day one. I’m enjoying the new tracks, which bring a mix of nostalgia and freshness to the game. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in the next wave! No playlist is complete with Mario Kart!
  • Puzzle & Dragons (Switch) – This is a fun mash-up of genres, though it’s mostly a match-three game. It’s also done the rounds on most consoles over the years, but comes in at a low enough price to appeal to fans. Check out my Puzzle & Dragons review for all the details!
  • Inukari: Chase of Deception (Switch) – I’ve just started playing this retro-inspired platformer about a fox spirit who must save the world from the greed of humanity. Watch out for my upcoming review!

If you’re wondering what to play this weekend, look no further! While the Pure Nintendo team works hard on reviews, we also play a lot of other titles in our downtime. If you’re looking for gaming inspiration, our playlist of Nintendo titles is here to help!

This week has a strong Pokémon and Zelda theme going, with Arceus, Unite, Pearl, and Sword making the list for team Pokémon. On the Zelda side of things, there’s a lot of love for the likes of Tri Force Heroes – it’s the topic of an upcoming podcast after all, so stay tuned for that. We’re also playing LEGO games, Mario Kart, and Rocket League, to name just a few in our playlist – and that’s not even counting our many review titles. Check out all our reviews from February!

If you’re looking for a new game to play, there’s bound to be something in our playlist for you. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s check out the games stealing our time lately.

And don’t forget to let us know what you’re playing at the moment! What’s on your playlist?

Pure Nintendo playlist

Roger

  • Hundred Days Winemaking Simulator (Switch) – I’ve been spending time, trying to learn the ropes of wine making. OK I’m not really learning how to make wine, I’m reviewing 100 Days Winemaking Simulator. There’s quite a bit that the game has to offer too. Check back to read my review in the not so distant future.
  • Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure (Switch) – Being a huge fan of both Indiana Jones and pinball, this is right up my alley.
  • Knockout City (Switch) – I’m not a competitive person, but for some reason I get really competitive with Knockout City. I really enjoy this game, maybe because I’m somewhat good at it (I never was good at dodgeball as a kid).

Ted

  • Pokémon UNITE (mobile) – I’ve played at least one ranked game a day this week with my girlfriend. In previous seasons we’ve only been doing quick games, but it’s time to (try) to get to Master Rank — or at least Expert! Update: I’m now in Expert!
  • A Musical Story (Switch) – I stumbled across this psychedelic gem this week, and it’s easily my favourite game of the year! A genuinely unique rhythm game that I just get lost in on evenings when I want to wind down with some vibey music. If you’re a Pink Floyd or Jimi Hendrix fan and want to be musically and visually blown away — get this!

Trev

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U) – I’ve certainly got review games and the like, but this is my only repeat from the last playlist. Are your surprised? The game is huge! It also represents something of a theme for my list this time around, as you will see.
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) – Our next Koopa Kast will be on this classic. It’s easily one of my favorites, so any excuse to revisit it is welcomed!
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS) – Completing my Zelda-themed playlist is Tri Force Heroes. I actually was able to play this online (with Kirk & Jes), and we nearly melted the servers! It was fun, though. I’m hoping this will show on my playlist again, as I’m looking to adventure with Kaelyn, who gave this game a 9 out of 10! If anyone else is looking to party like it’s 2015, reach out to me on Twitter.

Kirk

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS) – After my online session with Trevor and Jes, I’ve decided to take another crack at completing it with my kids. Five years on, though, and now I’m the one holding them back.
  • Triangle Strategy (Switch) – Working through this one for review purposes, but I would’ve worked through it regardless. So far, it’s been an excellent combination of story and SRPG gaming, and I really like the balance between exploration and combat…I just wish I was more into this whole HD-2D thing that others seem to like.
  • Pinball FX3 – Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure (Switch) – From best to worst:
    • Raiders of the Lost Ark
    • The Last Crusade
    • The Pinball Adventure
    • Temple of Doom
    • The Crystal Skull.

Jes

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS) – I somehow own a copy of this game but never played it before hopping online with Trevor and Kirk. It was alot of fun, despite the servers trying their hardest to not cooperate. I decided to keep playing the game offline afterwards, so I hope to report back once I’m more through the game.
  • Edge of Eternity (Switch) – A JRPG I reviewed, Edge of Eternity is a mixed bag. It’s an OK game but the fact that it’s a cloud version that doesn’t work well, my time with Edge of Eternity hasn’t been great. It’s got great moments but those moments are usually ruined by bad pacing, design and lackluster storytelling.
  • Pendula Swing: The Complete Journey (Switch) – Another game I am reviewing, this game is quite the journey (no pun intended). It’s an adventure game that digs deep into very real-world social issues. It’s not a game for everyone, and my time with it has been quite the trip, but adventure fans looking for a talking sim might be in for a treat.
  • DOOM Eternal (Switch) – I’ve always liked the DOOM games and the newest entry on Nintendo Switch was given a steep discount this past week on the eShop. I jumped in on the savings and wow, what a game. It’s fast, it’s insane and it’s delightful. Plus the Switch port is very, very good!

Justin

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) – I completed the main storyline but there’s still plenty of Pokémon to catch. This has to be one of my favorite Pokémon games ever. It really is fantastic with the various gameplay additions and improvements to the typical formula. Can’t wait for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet later this year!
  • Rocket League (Switch) – This is still one of my go-to games. If anyone wants to play sometime, let me know on Twitter!

Cody

  • Pokémon Shining Pearl (Switch) – I took a break from this game when Legends Arceus came out, but now I’m back to complete the post-game. There are a lot of fun things to do once you beat the main game. I am enjoying the underground aspect.
  • Pudding Monsters (Switch) – This is an App-Like puzzle game that I have a review coming out for later. It’s a fun and addictive game where you work to combine little monsters into one big blob.
  • Pokémon Sword (Switch) – Today is the last day for the event to get Shiny Galarian Zapdos, so I’ve been playing to try and get the electric bird.

Kaelyn

  • GTA3 (Switch) – I can’t describe to you the rush of nostalgia that came over me when I started up this game. Regardless of how silly the NPCs look or the random bugs, I am having so much fun playing this. The last time I played GTA 3 I was probably 11 years old. I was amazed at the freedom I had and it was the funniest game I had ever played. I don’t know if I ever actually played through the story, as I was content just blowing stuff up and mowing down NPCs with the fastest car I could find (we’ve all done it XD). So now I hope to fully complete each of these games… AND I can take them anywhere! I love my Nintendo Switch <3
  • River City Girls Zero (Switch) – I’ve been trying to get through as much of this game as I can before writing my review. I hope to finish it up this weekend!

Jemma

  • Move or Die: Unleashed (Switch) – This is one of the craziest and most fun multiplayer games I’ve played in awhile, with super-short levels of colorful insanity that will have you laughing and screaming in equal measure. Check out my Move or Die: Unleashed review for all the details!
  • LEGO DC Super-Villains (Switch) – More exploration and unlocking of characters and yellow bricks in Gotham City and surrounding areas. This is one of the most fun LEGO adventures, though I can’t wait to play the Skywalker Saga next month!
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo (Switch) – I was so excited to try this game when the demo arrived last week, and I was not disappointed! The demo is just as cute and fun as I’d expected, and I look forward to playing the full game later this month.
  • Gem Wizards Tactics (Switch) – I played and reviewed this tactical game recently, it has some great elements going for it, marred mostly by poor visuals, especially the text size, which was annoyingly small. It’s fun enough for tactical fans who might be able to pick it up on sale. Check out my Gem Wizards Tactics review for the full story!
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – There’s always time for Mario Kart. I’m super excited about the upcoming DLC, so I had a race to brush up before the new tracks hit us next week.

Wondering what the Pure Nintendo team has been playing lately? If you’re looking for gaming inspiration, look no further, as we delve into our playlist of Nintendo titles that are stealing our free time this week.

Unsurprisingly, we’ve been playing a lot of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, with Pokémon Snap also making an appearance. The Legend of Zelda, Metroid Dread, and LEGO games are other classic playlist highlights this week, amongst recently released games we’ve been reviewing.

The retro love is also strong this week, with a lot of Earthbound action from the Switch SNES online collection. Meanwhile, Infernax is a new adventure game that wears its retro inspiration clearly on its sleeve.

If you’re looking for a game to play this week, there’s bound to be something in our playlist for you. So, what are we waiting for – let’s check out the games keeping us busy lately.

And don’t forget to let us know what you’re playing at the moment!

Pure Nintendo playlist

Roger

  • Earthbound (SNES – Nintendo Switch online) – Influenced by members of the PN staff, I have decided that I should really play Earthbound. This is my first time playing the game. Yes, I know I probably should turn in my “Nintendo Fan” badge because of it. I’m looking forward to playing more of this game.
  • Splotches (Switch) – I’ve also been playing the puzzle game Splotches. While it’s not really my “cup of tea” I can see how this game could be appealing to a younger audience.

Ted

  • Color Zen (Switch) – I recently upgraded to an OLED and scoured the eShop for anything that would show off more vivid screen, and this did just that and more! I spent way too long tapping away on these colourful puzzles in a pitch-black room (the ideal way to play Switch OLED handheld. Playing this had me thinking, we need more games that utilise the switch’s touch screen!
  • 35MM (Switch) – I played through this most of the weekend to review with PN. Uh, yeah. Maybe give this one a miss, or pick it up on a sale if you want to give it a go!
  • Arcade Archives DONKEY KONG (Switch) – I’m a sucker for some classic Donkey Kong; the Game Boy version is my personal favourite. Don’t ask me why, but there is something about playing this handheld in vertical mode that makes it so special. Incredibly challenging (for me), but special.

Trev

  • Metroid Dread (Switch) – Bring on Rookie Mode! Though I’m bummed I can’t apply it to my eisting (nearly finished) save file, it gives me an excuse to replay the game.
  • Rover Mechanic Simulator (Switch) – I’m finalizing my review of this simulation, so keep an eye out for it in the next few days. Spoiler…it’s sort of middle of the road for the genre.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U) – I was a bit under the weather this weekend, so I decided to dive back into this game for the first time in five years. The sheer length means it’ll probably show up on my next playlist also.

Kaelyn

  • Earthbound (SNES – Nintendo Switch online) – I beat Earthbound again. I love this game so much. It’s silly and weird and challeging. There are so many memorable characters and moments. It’s funny because I’ve beat the game more than once but I almost always skip the 2nd Sanctuary location until I get to the end and realize I need it XD
  • Animal Crossing (Switch) – I’m waiting for a few games to be released so I needed something to kill time until then. I haven’t played in almost nine months. Seems like the island survived pretty well without me. As I roamed around looking for things to do, I realized I had done everything, and I was bored. So I started flattening my island and moving houses and stores around. I think it’s time for an island upgrade! I can’t wait to start building it up again!

Cody

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus (Switch) – I beat the game the other week, but the new update with the Mass Outbreaks has been a lot of fun. There have been a lot more shines than I’m used to, and it’s helping me complete Alphadex.
  • Pokémon Snap (Switch) – After beating Legend Arceus I’ve been on a Pokémon kick and am trying to get a 4-star photo of everyone Pokémon in the game. The two DLC levels are a lot of fun and more challenging than the original ones.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) – I beat the game years ago, but my wife and I are on a quest to get every Korok seed in the game (all 900 of them!) It’s also still fun to roam around on Master Cycle through the Great Plateau. Hopefully, we get an update on the sequel soon.

Jemma

  • Infernax (Switch) – I really enjoyed this retro-inspired action-platfomer, which is like an ode to the 8-bit era. It’s tough but fair with a great leveling up system.
  • LEGO DC Super-Villains (Switch) – We’ve been replaying this over the last few days, one of my favorite LEGO games actually, after LEGO City Undercover. It’s so fun running around as the likes of the Joker and Harley Quinn. And of course I love collecting copious amounts of studs to unlock as many characters as possible.
  • Earthbound (SNES – Nintendo Switch Online) – We’ve been talking about this a lot within the team lately. What a classic title! This just oozes ’90s vibes, with great graphics, sound, and of course a quirky cast of characters dealing with a time-based alien invasion. It literally has everything you need in a great game.
